June 2009 - Message from the President
Hello members, 2009 has proven to be a challenge for many of our fellow organizations throughout the state. Between budget cuts and the resulting layoffs, many departments have been hit hard by the downturn in the economy. Even though we will be facing cuts in positions, we appear to have escaped cuts in bodies. I don’t want to give people any misconceptions though, there is a possibility of cuts at some point in the next fiscal year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010), and likely more severe cuts for the 2010-2011 budget year. Please see our SCOPO Legislative Analyst’s latest report here: http://www.scopo.org/index_files/Page688.htm for a more detailed analysis of where we’re headed. There are some possible ways that the State could help out counties with some of their budget woes, but it is premature to tell how things will turn out. Additionally, remain vigilant of continued attacks on our retirement and healthcare plans. During this time of economic hardship, many outside forces will be looking to go on the attack against everything we’ve fought hard to keep intact over the years. With your continued support, the Association will continue to actively pursue ways to mitigate or remove these threats in the months ahead; while keeping the members' best interests at the forefront of our decision making process. Sincerely, |
