July 2010 – Message from the President

Since our last update, our Association reached agreement with the County on saving dollars and jobs. The agreement allowed us to save jobs while maintaining our medical and retirement contribution rates, by extending our current contract through June of 2010. Along with the extension, we also agreed to deferrals of our COLA scheduled for this year, and any merit (step) increases due after June 21, 2010. The deferred COLA and merit increases will be paid in January of 2012. Additionally, we were able to reach agreement on the expansion of our alternate work hours, specifically the return of our 4/10 plan! Effective the first week of July, our membership will enjoy the benefits of participation in the 4/10 plan in addition to the standard 8-hour and 9/80 plans. Furthermore, an agreement was reached on an early retirement incentive package; which will allow eligible members to retire within 120 days of approval and collect a lump sum amount of $32,500. Lastly, as a result of our Association taking the lead in concession bargaining, five other bargaining units took similar steps in reducing the County’s budget deficit and saving jobs for their members; this is certainly a testament to the times we live in.

The remainder of 2010 and 2011 will continue to be challenging times for this organization, but also one filled with hope. We are planning several projects for the remainder of 2010, including attendance at the annual Oakland A’s Law Enforcement Day and participation in the Packed With Pride program for active duty military personnel. We are also working to coordinate a literacy program sponsored by the Association, with more details to come as the program is developed. Despite the current economic situation, it will always be important for us to give back to those in need within our communities and to educate the public about our role as probation officers; which includes an explanation about who we are, what we do, and why we are important to the criminal justice system.

Be safe and stand committed.
